From The Chairman

This is the first opportunity that I have to thank all committee members for the work that they have carried out over the last year and I also take the opportunity to welcome the new committee. All committee members devote their precious time to improve Wimbledon Park. As a Residents' Association we have quite a reputation throughout Merton and with the Council for getting things done and we aim to remain that strong. I would also like to wholeheartedly thank Ceri Sheeran who has bravely taken on the task of producing the newsletter as Paul Burgess, had to leave the country at short notice. My thanks also go to Liz Baker who has contributed very positively in editing and producing this newsletter.

What is happening about the SAFEWAY superstore? The application was called in by the Secretary of State and a public enquiry was held. We await the results of the enquiry. There was not much of a response to the re-development of Wimbledon Park Hall at the last AGM, but the committee has decided to pursue this matter and will look into any options that are available and favourable to a majority of the residents. Stephen Saul has kindly accepted to work closely with the Association on this.

At the AGM a number of residents were concerned about the loss of Weir Road waste disposal site. I feel that this issue needs to be addressed. We are aware of the problems with refuse collection particularly about garden waste. The committee has requested a public meeting with Councillors and Officers of the Council. I hope you will be able to attend the public meeting and air you views and we hope to get some concrete answers from the Council.

As usual traffic and parking are another major concern and we are very fortunate to have Richard on our committee to look at this. A survey will be carried out to find the views of residents on residents parking permits and traffic movement.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Hindu families a Happy Diwali and a Happy New Year which were celebrated at the end of October. Our Muslim families will be fasting during the month of Ramadan which is due to start towards the end of December and followed by Idd. I also take this opportunity to wish them a Happy Idd.

Once again the Cresidents from The Crescent have organised the Christmas tree lighting up ceremony for 29th November 1997. On the same day the street lights on Arthur Road will be switched on. I hope everyone can join us at Christ the King Church, at the junction of Arthur Rd and The Crescent at 4.30pm.

Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Paresh Modasia,
Chairman
