Improvements to Wellington Park / Durnsford Recreation Ground

1.      The development & landscaping of the former bowling green into a toddlers' play areas is progressing and will comprise 3 small flat-topped mounds. The top of each mound will provide the play areas with the sides being planted with trees, shrubs and bushes. About 1000 - 2000 mixed spring bulbs will be made available by Merton Council provided the parents & the school children carry out the planting. Joanne Hearn has undertaken to co-ordinate this.

2.      The repair & refurbishment of the former clubhouse (subject to an arson attack about 3 years ago) is complete and the Council hopes someone will take a lease and open a One O'clock Club or something similar.

3.      The planting of the 25kg (approx. 1200) mixed daffodil bulbs contributed by WPRA is completed. Mindful of item 1 above, these were planted in the area of the park, which is accessible to the dog walkers (in the residents' planting areas and around the trees).

4.    Twenty new trees will be planted this autumn (8 sponsored, 12 from the Council. All should be in place by mid-November. As last year the £40 payment for a sponsored tree will be given to the WPRA and the WPRA will pay the Council on receipt of its invoice.  Some 60% of the trees in this park now represent the life of a person living or passed away. Apart from the many children's trees and a number of family trees, there are also several sisters & brothers, mothers & fathers, wives & husbands as well as grandchildren, aunts, nieces & nephews.

5.    The opening & closing of the park by the residents (now in its second
year) continues to work well.

Although there is nothing further to report, the projects have not been given up and we will continue to work with Council to develop this site.
