GUEST SPEAKERS
Ian Cramp, Town Centre Manager.
Ian Cramp spoke about his job as the liaison between the local authority and businesses. His job is financed by the W.T.C.  Partnership, including Friends' Provident, Sainsburys and Elys.  WTC is no longer simply a retail town centre.  The residential component is likely to increase.  There are plans to construct decking over the Railway Lines to their shops and offices.  There are concerns from people reluctant to use the town centre at certain times of the day, e.g. late at night, and also about the prevalence of litter in some areas.  Wimbledon has moved in a leisure direction in recent years.  There is also a scheme to slow traffic.

Patsy Bell
Patsy Bel compared Arthur Road with Penge as a shopping area, and noted some similarities.
In Penge there is a scheme to get traders together, which has resulted in a great improvement in the shopping area.  Events take place such as a Christmas Fair and a market.  The local council liases with ideas, and the area has improved greatly.

Sue Knibbs, Library Forum.
Sue Knibbs stated that the library in Arthur Road closed on 1st April 2000.  It is greatly regretted that the closure still occurred despite all the protests and hard work with demonstrations, etc. that tried to avert it. The Council appeared to have already made up their minds, and were completely uninterested in any opposition.   The projected savings appear to have been notional.  Books
ARE still important.  The Library Forum has had two meetings with the new Council Leader, Peter Holt, and a third is planned.  We do not know if anything positive will result, but at least we are now talking.  The Mobile Library is under-used, so please encourage more people to use it.

P.C.Mark Roberts, Local Beat Manager, Durnsford Ward.
Comparing the crime figure for 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, burglaries are stable at 29 (98-99) and 30 (99-00) but vehicle crime has increased from 72 (98-99) to 90 (99-00).
A scheme was devised to target criminals in May this year, and there has been a decrease in recent months.
Comparisons of other crimes, e.g. assault, criminal damage etc. are 51(98-99) and 45(99-00).
The Ringmaster scheme is spreading.  This is a system for disseminating information by computer and telephone.
There are still some alleys ungated, and there is assistance available if required.
There are still some NHW street reps needed, and a co-ordinator in the Mount Road area is required.
