First Impressions

I was delighted to be asked to contribute my first impressions, to the Wimbledon Park Residents' Association's Christmas Newsletter. I am aware that our school has played a major role in this community for a long time. I have met many generations of families who are proud of their association with this school. I am committed to keeping a good relationship with our neighbours. Obviously the new building programme and problems with parking have tested this relationship, but I would like to thank you for your tolerance and understanding, which is much appreciated by the governors, staff and parents. I welcome local residents involvement in the school and value any suggestions or comments you may have about how we can improve our association with you.

I started teaching in 1974. My entire career has been devoted to teaching London children. I have taught children aged from three to eighteen, a wide range of subjects, in a wide variety of schools, from private convent, large, girls comprehensive, boys' junior school to an inner-city, multi-cultural primary.  I have been a Headteacher twice before. Being a Headteacher is the best job in the world, because it gives you the power to do good and make a difference.

My immediate impression when I started at Wimbledon Park School was "what a happy place" as I watched the children skip along the corridor and at break times playing harmoniously, old-fashioned games with hoops, skipping ropes and conkers. The school is multi-cultural and multi-faith and at times resembles the United Nations. It stands for justice and equal opportunities with a culture that is welcoming, harmonious and child centred. The school community prides itself on being inclusive, respectful and tolerant. There is a strong team and school spirit among staff, governors, parents and children - all pulling in the same direction. There is a high expectation of children's behaviour and learning and a genuine Eco awareness of the wider issues that affect our community. But if I had to choose one, overriding quality of Wimbledon Park School to celebrate, it is generosity of spirit.

The world is changing at an ever-accelerating pace. We are in the middle of a learning revolution. No other organisation faces the challenges as radical as those that will transform schools in the 21st century. I believe that Wimbledon Park School with its well-earned reputation as a "quality" school is perfectly placed to rise to this challenge. I am delighted to be Headteacher during this exciting time of growth and development.
