The Woodman Community Fair
Throughout the week leading up to the fair, lots of people had been watching weather forecasts daily, looking at longer range forecasts and wondering just where the low pressure bringing the poor weather was going to be on Saturday 18th. Everyone was also wondering just how well the residents of Wimbledon Park had recovered from the marathon of watching the World Cup.
We woke up on Saturday to bright sunshine. "Would it last?" we all asked ourselves, as our willing band of helpers started to arrive throughout the morning. All morning the sun shone and highlit numerous tables and items to entertain the residents of Wimbledon Park.
Soon the car park had a range of stalls set up. Stalls with books, bric-a-brac international foods, plants and Third World produce. A wheel of fortune was set-up; our local scouts had a tombola stall. In the middle of the car park stood a bright red Mitsubishi Colt. The car was on offer as a prize for throwing seven sixes. Recently a car was won in this manner at fete nearby. The Woodman Public House was brightly covered in a colourful display of bunting.
For the younger members of the community, we had a firm favourites, the Bouncy Castle. There were two reaction testers and for the very young, a hook-a-boat and temporary tattoos. A Dennis the Menace figure made an appearance, usually with an older relative poking their head through a cut out, for children to throw wet sponges at their faces. Children also had a football game. Our local police officers showed them how fingerprints are taken.
Our Master of Ceremonies for the day was Mr. Smith, a teacher from Wimbledon Park First School, resplendent in gold hat and tails.
The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Linda Kirby, arrived shortly after noon and opened the fair. Our Member of Parliament, Roger Casale, was also a guest. Both Councillor Kirby and Roger Casale made speeches of welcome to our community.
Soon the residents of Wimbledon Park started to arrive to join in the second Woodman Community Fair, following the success of last year's inaugural event. After a brief scare with the weather when we had a slight drizzle, the sun came out again and stayed out for the rest of the day.
