Tennis Championships 2026
The management improvements we were hoping for at this year's tennis championships did not entirely work out. The Queue is fast becoming a social event in itself which means that the numbers overall are growing with all the knock-on effects that go with this, in particular the unhygienic consequences of too few toilets and poor management of the gates at closing time.
The Community Panel of local stakeholders set up last year with the AELTC to discuss improvements in the management of the Queue is going to be busy this year sorting out the problems. We can only hope that the AELTC are in better listening mode and next year do the right thing and happily indulge in overestimating rather than underestimating the requirements.
AELTC Development Plans
Alternative plans for the proposed AELTC development were put forward by the architects Richard Rees and Ken MacFarlane at recent Save Wimbledon Park meetings in Southfields and Wimbledon. These have been greeted enthusiastically locally and it is difficult to understand why the AELTC does not wish to engage in serious discussion with the community over plans that could avoid the continuing legal challenges that have delayed their plans so far. SWP have permission to appeal both the Judicial Review decision in October last year and the Statutory Trust decision earlier this year in March.
Nigel Israel
Sadly we have to report the recent passing of Nigel Israel, a long time resident and committee member and Treasurer of WPRA. He will be sadly missed by his friends in Wimbledon Park.
Fish Deaths in Wimbledon Park Lake
In the newsletter you will find a summary of a paper by resident ecologist Dr Dave Dawson on the fish deaths in Wimbledon Park Lake during Wimbledon Fortnight. This is not the first time this type of event has occurred and we will be following the progress of the ongoing investigation.
